You can imagine my surprise when the gas station attendant told me to 'shut up.' What??? What is going wrong when gas station employees can tell customers to 'shut up' without any repercussion?

It all started when an old lady, with a beat up 1988 Corolla pulls into the station - she fills up her car with gas @ 400 hundred dollars a gallon, pays the attendant and asks if someone can check the air in her tires.

'No.' Sundip replied. (he's Pakistani) there is no one here who can help you. Not even the mechanic you hear working in the back. NOBODY.

Confused the lady questioned, 'oh - because there used to be someone that would check it for me.'

She turned to leave.

Outraged, I asked Sundip, 'Why are you so lazy, can't you help an old lady?'

Which is when he replied 'Shut Up, you don't know the law.'

I left the counter, went up to the lady and recommended that she go in and ask one of the mechanics to take out his little pressure gauge and do his job. After all, she just paid $40 to fill up her car.

As I left, I finally realized what Sundip meant - if this lady, as a result of a blown tire, were to get into an accident , she could blame the folks at the gas station for improperly inflating her tires...

But then she could also say - 'they didn't help me...'

What we are looking at here is a case of, 'damned if you do.. damned if you don't.'

Do we want to live in a society where everyone fends for themselves or a place where we can actually learn to help people without fear of legal repercussions.
