David Beckham is used to big-time managers, having played for the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Add Canadian Frank Yallop to that list.
Yallop is a former MLS coach of the year (2001) with the San Jose Earthquakes, which he led to the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003.
As coach of the LA Galaxy, Yallop will have Beckham in his lineup next season after the former England captain agreed to a deal with the MLS team Thursday...
And to think, last summer a buddy and I were laughing at the concept of Ronaldo playing for the Red Bull...
Anyone who's gay for Beckham knew that this move was coming. He was quickly embarrassing himself in Europe (being dropped by England and not starting in Real) so why not enjoy the twilight of his career in Los Angeles.. at 32...work on his soccer school, hang on, let me load my bowl...
Like Gretzky coming to the Kings, Beckham, the world's most marketable sports figure, is going to try and crack the US market. Already in one day the Galaxy have sold 2000 season tickets. And already in one day, Beckham has lost his allure. Maybe if the MLS... (I can't even keep a straight face) can come up with a few more players, it'll make the overall matches more interesting. I hear Platini has his eye on the Kansas City Wizards...
As wonderful as it seems to have Becks play in the MLS, it's too big and obscure a move. It's like a trying to put a roof on a house that has no walls; there's no support. How long can one man keep interest alive? In order for this move to be interesting, it's can't be about him playing to 'our' level, the MLS players have to play at his level. And all dickness aside, Landon Donovan, one of the better players in the MLS, couldn't hack it over there.. so how is this going to work?
But for team Becks, it's perfect. Posh can work on her 'career', the kids can mingle with the Pitts' and not worry about kidnappings and David will enjoy relative obscurity. But boy does it ever cheapen the brand.
