It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep describing the sheer joy of seeing the Hip in Los Angeles - however last night's show (and no doubt the shows tonight and tomorrow) at the Troubadour was absolutely insane. With only 450 people in the audience, it was impossible not to get swept up in the energy of the Canucks.
A few of my buddies flew in from Victoria just for the show and they certainly weren't disappointed. Now admittedly, I've become a pretty big snob when it comes to the band, I've seen them at GM place in Vancouver years and years ago.. but have now seen them 11 times in small clubs like the House of Blues, The Avalon or the El Rey...and there's simply no comparison - not to mention it's only $30!!! Suck on that bitches!!! Now musically the show was deadly - such a small place, such a big sound...it was something to behold - however noticeably missing was Road Apples. Not one track. Maybe that's a good thing, the place may have burned to the ground had they played Little Bones...the roof was certainly on fire...but who needed water when there was Redbull and Vodka. They opened the second set acoustically. All crammed on one tiny stage, epic!! I guess as a true fan I should have been happier that they played a couple of 'obscure' songs, and by 'obscure' I mean songs from, In Violet Light... I could have used a little more Up to Here but whatever. Nautical Disaster and Locked In The Trunk made up for it as did dancing with the Dave's I know; Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch and Kevin McDonald... Thanx Billy Ray. |
