I think by nature, anytime you tell someone your feelings, it's going to be awkward, especially if you don't really know the person. You're risking 'humiliation'. You're telling 'this person' how you feel about them, you're opening yourself up. But it becomes less awkward as we become more confident in ourselves. It's also how we deal with it, and how much importance we put on it, that determines how awkward the situation can be. In fact, I wouldn't even tell him. Don't give him that. If you tell him you like him, and he doesn't like you back - then every day you see him, you'll think... 'great, I'm that girl' Don't show him your cards.
But here's the good news, you don't actually have to tell someone you like them. Actions speak louder than words, so saying 'hello' to him, smiling and laughing at his jokes are all ways to show someone you like them without putting yourself in an awkward situation, by having to tell them.
So if you feel that it would be too awkward to tell him, just slowly pay a bit more attention to him, but don't be obvious. Don't linger around him and tell no one. And hopefully, he'll be the one telling you that he likes you.
