I Think They're Talking About Me
One of the hardest things to develop while growing up is a sense of security. We do everything for everyone in hopes they'll like us more. We do whatever our boss tells us because we're afraid of losing our job... but what if we're wrong? What if we stood up for ourselves? What then? Graduation Day: I invited all the "cool" kids back to my place for the traditional "Champaign Breakfast." You see, every year the graduating class would party all night and watch the sun rise over Montreal... then they'd go to someone's house for breakfast. This was a perfect opportunity for me to be popular and look cool. This year, breakfast was at MY place. I remember waiting in my kitchen, hoping they would show up.. they did.. but only for the free Champaign and food. I used to volunteer myself and my mom's car just so I could go out at night. I'd always offer to drive just so I could hang around... This pattern of insecurity has followed me into my 20's and now my professional life. I get so worried about "not getting the contract" that I practically give my services away. Even when I know that nobody else can match my product or service I still tend to give more than I should. Why? Because I really really want them to like me and I'm afraid that if I ask for my fair price, someone else will swoop in and "steal" my contract. There has to be a point when you feel confident enough in your own abilities to walk away when you know you are being taken advantage of. There comes a time when you have to stop working based on promises; when you let fate determine the outcome. "Maybe it'll really happen..maybe those company shares they offered me will bounce back.." I have relied on many people in the past and most have let me down. Actually, what they have done is, forced me to look at my own abilities. I started accomplishing things "just to spite" the nay sayers... Soon enough I realized that, all the ability I need lies within' me. If you have done all that you can and you're still not getting the respect you deserve, it's okay to walk on.. If not, you'll always be stuck doing everyone else's bidding. There are people in this world that will continue to take advantage of you. Be it at work, school or play.. there are vultures who prey on the weak just to get ahead. Stay strong, believe in yourself because it always works out. CommentsThere are no comments on this item. |
