Did I Stutter

child says "um" a lot
I reached out a friend of mine, she’s a speech pathologist I asked her about my daughter (2.5 years old) and why she’s always saying “um.” I kinda figured it was normal, but I’m neurotic so I had to ask a professional.  And why not take advantage of free advice.  This is what she had to say:
It is my pleasure to answer any question and/or direct you to some resources.  Without seeing your daughter in person, it sounds like she is using a very normal disfluency for her age. Interjections like “um” are often used when a child is trying to figure out what to say and how to say it. It often occurs during a burst of language development, when her capacity to speak is not as developed as the demands to speak. It is helpful to model and provide an easy, relaxed, patient way of communicating during this time. I’m attaching a great resource for you to look at – explaining the difference between normal disfluency and mild stuttering, and some tips for talking. I really don’t think you have anything to worry about, but it’s always good to be aware of the warning signs and be on top of things.http://www.stutteringhelp.org/content/parents-pre-schoolers
